Your Temporomandibular Joints are the points where your skull meets your jaws. Your jaw
joints and the muscles on each side of your jaw let you open and shut your mouth, chew, talk
and swallow. These two joints are among the most complicated in the body and they are
capable of many types of movement. They function with your jaw bones, muscles, ligaments
and cartilage in perfect equilibrium. Temporomandibular disorder, or TMD, is a group of
diseases that cause pain in the jaw joint that allows you to open and close your mouth. Women
are about twice as likely as males to get the illness.
Treatment or management of TMJD depends on the severity of the problem. Many people are
able to go on with their normal routines without any problems despite TMJ illness symptoms.
Sometimes it may go away on its own and other times it will become worse. Ask our Brampton
dentist for more information or clarity on TMD/TMJ.
